Happy B’earthday

squeezed to point of pain
between plates of hard glass
body facing east
breast facing west
lying on cold, aqua-blue vinyl
covered with white tissue wrap
lower extremes spread
invasive metal instruments
sitting in bare, beige room
upper arm cuffed and pumped
tongue extended
ears plundered
I do this for you
I wouldn’t do this for me
if there are soft infants
in your bright future
in healthy arms
I’d love to embrace them

  1. You had me squirming at “squeezed,” Miss, ๐Ÿ™‚ [Interesting how you begin with “squeeze” and end with “embrace” — a nice coming round, there.] Sweet words, sweet painting of a sweet girl — in all, a tenderly sweet birthday card for Caroline about to turn 17. Happy birthday, Caroline! (Oh, to be 17 again ….:))

      • You know Janis Ian’s “At Seventeen”? Well, the theme song of my life, at 17. ๐Ÿ™‚ (I still love that song, btw = by the way). Hope you’re having a good day, and hope plans are falling into place for sweet parties and sweet partings.

      • I adore that song. I think its lyrics resonated with me for many years beyond 17…
Day went well. Didn’t want to be weepy. So I listened to Glenn Miller all morning and danced while cleaning and getting ready. ๐Ÿ™‚
        Thank you, Deb.
