maternal nightmares

scary baby masklittle witch babies and tormenting black skies
gusting wind
long dark dresses swinging like death bells

a frail newborn with antlers growing
crying out as it tries to lift its weak neck
ocean-deep in salted sweat
those early months

panicking…

a pink infant
without bony deciduous growth
or skull-sunken cheeks

seventeen Halloween moons gone by since,
those first seconds
one more fall harvest
until her
perfect little face departs

dreaming…

scary baby mask, mixed media rendered a few weeks back…
the first time I was pregnant: during the first trimester, I had many bizarre dreams–some were nightmarish, others surreal like Dali paintings…my oldest is now 17 and college planning is on, lots of positive dreaming 🙂

  1. MY GOD AnnMarie That Drawing is SO COOL!! That drawing should be hanging out in a museum somewhere. I love it! I love all things horror. I love everything you did with the drawing with the colors! You are a very talented woman. Keep up the good work!

  2. AM, I can understand your nightmare/dreams, can understand the driving force behind them — worries, excitement, the unknown. Understand it completely. And your artwork — is amazing. I blew up, checked out the details. Interesting, the eye (well, my eye) follows that amazing hair lock, and the forehead and those dark, empty eyes. Really, quite amazing — and eerie (sp?). Again, ironically, this visage reminds me very much of the one in my post today. So very nice.

  3. I vote for non-scary babies! Isn’t it weird what pregnancy hormones do to our poor mommy brains? I know where your heart is right now, as I look forward to Olivia heading to Kindergarten next week and wonder where that tiny baby girl disappeared to. Happy dreaming! – Fawn

    • With my first child, in those early months it was constant Chiller Theater in my dream head. No bad dreaming with the second one, though.
      Non-scary kiddies are best – agreed –
though, teens can be scary in the own right 😉
Olivia is going to be brilliant – I’ve no doubt of that 🙂

  4. A creepy baby gives even the toughest hearts a chill. AWESOME
Very effective: starting us up with the superbly horrific image, then opening with a very witchy and dark ambiance, and finally bringing us back to the present with sweet heart warming reality. Bravisimo!! Hi five AnnMarie!!

  5. Kids gone….house back to its normal self….naps taken….back to my morning coffee routine…and I must say, catching up by beginning with this made me take a second gulp of coffee immediately! Wow! This is one creepy baby….could be in a poster for a horror movie — and I mean that in a complimentary way! It is really really spooky!!! Ugh…those must have been some nightmares! 😦 So glad you didn’t have a halloween baby 🙂
Oh my, dreaming indeed. Those days of planning for college are fun ones….especially when you get them talking. Will this be your first one out the door? I remember that I used to think it was such a trite saying….we have them for such a short time…..but oh my, it really is true. Think of it as your son “changing studios” 🙂
Okay….continuing to look backward here so I can catch up. Also was busy writing again this morning, as all the poems in the “scheduled” category are now depleted.
Wonderful weekend to you, my friend!

    • This image scared me a bit and I drew the darn thing 😉 Yes, the times go very quickly-too quickly. My daughter will be my first – my son will follow in 2 years. They are making it easy so far – they both do well in school and stay out of trouble 🙂 Glad yo had a lovely family visit – those go by too quickly also…
