In the Light of Newness

This new year, I approach in the light of newness
In this newness lives my pledge of faith, spirit and fellowship written in the persistent hand of love
Every day will forever be a new opportunity to move forward

There will be no:
“re”living
“re”doing
“re”hashing
“re”winding
“re”turning
“re”thinking
“re”defining
“re”starting
“re”creating
“re”writing
there will never be another
“re”solution
from where I start
in whatever I do
there will only be newness
giving the best that is possible within me
working not at “re”solutions
but solutions
within the brightness of a new day
arrived at with the clarity of forgiveness, the hope of promise and the fortitude of human spirit
Caroline and Max spiritThe only “re” I plan on allowing is recycling:)
This mural in the big son’s room will be painted over this winter-it is time

I wish you all a beautiful NEW YEAR
See you all on the other side of 2016!

escaping

the young athlete in purple and gold was trying to escape
his muscles maxing out in length beneath his sweating skin
each time crawling on knees and palms to reach the outer ring
to safety
every wrestler knows when you reach that white circle, the whistle blows
out of bounds
you get another chance
he was fierce
yes he was
in his determination

the other wrestler wearing the baby-blue and white singlet
continued lunging at his fleeing opponent
baby-blue and white wanted the win badly
purple and gold was trying with all his power to escape

on the other side of the large wrestling mat,
a bulbous-bellied man in a bright yellow shirt
was positioned like the sun
he stood there eclipsing all else around him with
his giant flashing camera and smashing fists
he was a bright star
without the warmth
but with all the heat
loads of hot air bursting out
through a constant barrage of bellows
screaming at the young wrestler–his son
“YOU HAVE TO DO BETTER THAN THAT”
“GOTTA PULL YOUR LEG ‘ROUND FASTER”
“QUIT RUNNING FOR THE RING”
“YOU’RE NOT TRYING”

and secretly, the young wrestler in the purple and gold and I both knew
he was trying
trying very hard
to escape
to reach that white circle
and never stop running

not what I expected

so far behind where I normally am for this time of year
as I suffer from HOHO OCD
don’t like doing the crazed shopping thing
with the reindeer-like snorting
and elfin foot twitching on some store’s yule tile

many changes ’round my gingerbread house this year
nothing horrid
just many needles simultaneously falling off the evergreen
this mad dropping conifer has been obstructing my path to
holiday hype preparedness

it happened today
while I was feeling very sorry for myself
and all that I had to accomplish
to create another Merry Memory

on the sick side of the pediatrician’s office
two little girls sharing the common bond
of a Christmas Cough and Holiday Hack
I sat there with the delicate daughter
(mind you, not so delicate when it comes to a throat culture, without a helmet she could take out Odell)
one of these precious little girls began singing,
Silver and Gold
then the other darling chimed in

my self-involved brain began singing along with them
an octave lower for the chorus
when they changed up the lyrics
they didn’t sing, “…silver and gold, silver and gold…”
they sang, “…silver and gold and blue and green and red…”
and they kept going
giggling while adding colors

before I knew it
I was giggling along with them
and the cranky old lady that had been sitting on my heart all day
reunited with her Christmas spirit
not what I expected
not at all

For those of you who celebrate, I extend a Merry Christmas
For all, I wish you a warm and exciting New Year full of hope and possibility

Peace, Love and Light,
am:)

pigmentless words

allowing a little light to
illuminate inside the heart
and to share what’s taken foothold
is not quite as daunting
on drawing paper or canvas
as it is to
express one’s soul in ‘pigmentless’ words
the grander the emotion
the greater the image
bigger, bolder maybe
powerful thought-evoking forms
screaming colors
seizing lines
frenzied strokes
verse
well, its meaning can’t be gotten
the same way at all
one’s embedded thoughts
culled through letters
timed with sweating nuance
almost impossible
to arrange in quartets
that sing without song
were it not for the passion
charging each ascending spark
into raging flame
a heaving wildfire
to burn down the castle walls
that the massive dragon
cannot smother

still grand

my pianochipped black and white keys
my hundred year old friend
gone
to another home
another love
the holiday music sheets are quiet
Christmas melodies ring out
through radio wires
and satellite dishes
not from beneath my fingers at this festive time
I do hope one day
to welcome another instrument
something much smaller
to dwell in the studio
alongside the paint brushes and pencils
it won’t be the same though
how could it
but I’ve had a wish fulfilled
luckier than many

during this holiday season
there is a struggling musician
with jubilant fingers playing
like silk bows across promising gifts
her young smile now as bright as
a Christmas star

and this to me
is beautiful music

let cling to our skin

they cling to the legs
Ignorance and Want
beneath rich velvet robes
two malnourished beings
present in Their suffering
we remain focused on our priorities
during this season of hope and love
wrap tenderly our hearts
with Their existence
let us go forth
in humble spirit
and grand charity

winning and losing

there was a dual wrestling meet last night
all these boys, young men really
hoping their practiced discipline and best efforts
would place them on this side of glory
a raised arm at third period’s end
a personal win
points for their team

quick food, hot coffee and school spirit
we bought an event tee for the big son
I didn’t look at the shirt ’til later
against the black cotton weave
was the image of a handsome, young man
135 pounds
his chiseled arm raised in victory

it was then I realized
the tournament was named after this wrestler
he’d died in a car accident two years ago

and I knew
whether the big son
won or lost
we’d been winning all along

at this time of year
when the magnifying glass
boxes in our hearts
may thoughts of warmth
go out to those
whose children are no longer here
but live on in their souls

“ball is life”

our children start moving away
our parents begin moving closer
the circle of life is a shape
that falls flat on its side
with no dimension
just one 360
and your time is over

I prefer a sphere
the sphere of living
the globe of going
the ball of bounty
you may go ’round
and around again
so let that dazzling ball drop
and roll into
a blessed and hopeful future

God Lamp

We are vessels
that’s what I remember
plaid hemline
across my rounded kneecaps
Vessels
like Aladdin’s lamp
I rub my hands together
hoping my genie
manifests through my fingertips
A spirit so powerful
she can reach up to God
and whisper in the Almighty ear
we need help down here
My wish
My prayer
God reveal yourself
in any form you fancy
for all the world to witness
Beneath whatever language
or symbols
or beliefs
we’ve scrawled
upon your entrance
You are
despite appearances
beneath the hype
one mutual voice
with a few simple requests
of mankind–
Kindness
Love
and
Peace on Earth
