that skin of hers

to get beneath that skin of hers
and force it perfect
I need her to understand
she is beautiful
I need her to see her entirety
to stop doing
what young girls do
not love themselves completely
permit shiny surfaces
and slick ink
to render their forms inferior

these cultures of ours
composed of humanity
but populated by shallow eyes
and deep pockets
should not so easily crawl
into young ears like robotic insects
and sting frail esteem
these young girls are all breathtaking
if we give them some space

they could stop hiding below hard water
and come up for air

if they gaze beyond
how blue the sky can be

the S word

each one of us
gets stuffed into a human skin
and chucked onto the world map
from there shit happens
we bound around
based on how we’ve defined
the S word

my first recollection of this word,
a football cheer from way back
my high school years
saddle-shoed cheerleaders would sing out
“S-U-C-C-E-S-S
that’s the way you spell success…”
I remember thinking
well, I’m already not a
S-U-C-C-E-S-S
I’m not a cheerleader

for many
Success is easy
it’s simply surviving
to witness another sunrise

for those of us not focused on
food, water, air, health
Success becomes something
entirely different

what is it we want
when we have the “freedom”
to make “choices”

I end here
because it is not for me to say
this is an intimate and personal journey
I leave with just a thought

the S word
S-U-C-C-E-S-S
begins with
SUC

and that’s what it will do
if you let it…
baby gorillaevery gorilla species is endangered, today many organizations and individuals are working tirelessly to return these gorgeous animals back to a survival success story

See my ROAR, Hear my PEN, Taste my ART

what is it we are trying to earn
what is it we want to hear
emphatically
with the heart of a child
and the head of an adult
what is the purpose
of
placing our raw insides
on fleeting outsides

is it for others to appreciate
what we’re trying to say
or are we desperate to hear
what we wish they would tell us

please
see my ROAR
hear my PEN
taste my ART

won’t you

Bird on a Toe

My Friends,
Purfeath is part bird. Though his appetite is much grander and his bones are much denser, he believes he’s fowl all the way down to his clawed feet. Purfeath enjoys letting birds rest on his toes. Besides tickling his feet, the touch of feathers makes Purfeath feel loved and lets him know he’s not alone, even though he’s one-of-a-kind.
Bird Toe

The other day I looked out at our bird feeder. It was nearly empty again. I can’t believe how much tiny birds eat. A gorgeous, red-headed woodpecker comes a callin’ every day too. A pair of bulky bluejays can’t fit their heads into the feeder. They luck out and get bread crusts and cookies for dessert.

I often look at the ‘frail’ birds pecking away at the feeder. How do hollow bones and light feathers keep them alive in these harsh, single digit temperatures? Nature is truly amazing.
birdhouseThe giant husband built this birdhouse. It’s hard to see, but there’s a little bird sitting on the “For Rent” sign to the right of the house. The giant husband’s sense of humor. 🙂

Thank you. May you dream of birds large and small gliding you across a sky of sleepy stars.
