can’t go there

(away)

burning

you arrived late
I sent you
(away)
you came back
sat there
and chipped into my circle
in your eyes
settled long ago
was something vague
I could not reach
yet
those watery surfaces gave
(away)
the clearest understanding
there was a suffering
your sweet mouth sealed from escape
and continued to do so
despite my knees on the floor
sometimes
there is the sometime
when no words
touch
or thought of any dimension
can worm into a wall

insatiable appetite

like a rogue lioness
I would have pounced
but that was then
(I’m not going to say)
and this is now
too predictable
both in word and deed

if I’ve accumulated anything
by virtue of the sinking sun
the lioness
is never predictable

as low as her folded hide may hang
as glazed as those golden eyes may glow
that broad chest of hers will never ferry ancient artifacts
each day of each year feeds her feline ribs
with fresh promise

a lioness
has an insatiable appetite, my friends
for pulsating life
for playing to her strengths

and so it goes

back then I would have pounced
but now I’ll observe awhile
before deciding whether or not to jump
on your flesh

say, aren’t you lucky
LionessI was listening to Glenn Miller while brushing my teeth and this popped into my head, I pounced down the basement stairs;) and released it here
I like this lioness – I’ve shown her several times before
I did use a reference image but I can’t remember from where, sorry

Miss Direction

Put your trust in the sky
she’s old and has been around
covering the world since inception
Put your faith in the sun
he’s a gentleman who
lives to share his warmth
Put your love under the moon
she will protect your dreams
and all who enter them
Put your human in your hands
let’s give ourselves
a fighting chance
Put your soul in your heart
fighting is for love
not war
Cloven with HeartI’ve shown Cloven several times now, she’s one of my favorites
Sometimes we humans can learn much from our brother and sister
animal friends, if we’d only follow their directions

mondaysters

Thinking holidays
and it’s time for some monsters
there are always monsters
good
and
bad
may the good creatures
blaze the brightest path
pukwidgienow here is a sweet fella
just don’t piss him off
if he turns purple
you’re in trouble
unless you have Twinkies

Voodoo Yellow Man/mixed mediarun very fast in the opposite direction
or start throwing those Twinkies
he detests litter, so make sure you throw out the wrappers 😉

Riding the Cyclone

cyclone milliethey say you can never go back
she did, at 79
the magic of optimism
in her breast
returning to Coney Island
for the ride of her life
a young man locked her in
brave nana, kneecaps knocking
beneath that padded bar
she didn’t look back
only forward
at the dropping parallel lines
stomach lifting steel
smiling, laughing, screaming
on this Halloween
she leaps another year to the right
considering each 365, a dazzling gift
nothing about her has changed much
her remarkable passion
her boundless spirit
why, in 80 years
the only thing that has changed
is the ticket price
her first ride cost twenty-five cents
last month, the Cyclone was twelve dollars

shy party doghappy birthday, mom

HoNest

nested internal thoughts
resistant to the bearer’s weight
honesty to ourselves each time
form healthy embryos
protected by truth

lies crack under pressure
less than honorable thoughts
eventually break our souls
eagleeagle done a few months ago, Tombow water color marker, Prisma pencil and a touch of white acrylic

We nearly lost the bald eagle in the 1960’s. DDT weakened shells to the point of cutting down this raptor population from 500,000 strong to a scant 1,000. Through conservation programs and legal protection the bald eagle has made a miraculous return to the US landscape. DDT was banned in 1972.
Fun Fact: The bald eagle is the only eagle unique to North America

The Colors of Humanity

Imagine our earth a giant color wheel
each of us a gorgeous dot of pigment
equal reds, equal greens, all colors equal

but we humans don’t think in terms of equal
quite as much as we should
we are alike
but ‘enjoy’ thinking otherwise
we tend to shove one another around
crash head to head
  we cancel each other out
and become void
we choose to destroy our brilliance

yet
if we agreed

equal to be equal
equal reds, equal greens
if we learned to stand
side by side
what beauty there would be

on the color wheel they call this complimenting
on the earth we’d call it peace
parrotI can’t think of a more beautiful, earthly color coexistent than a parrot
parrot in Prisma pencil done around 2002

opposing colors on the color wheel are called complimentary because when placed side by side they brighten, when these same colors are mixed in equal measure, they create a neutral or gray

For My Friend, Who Thinks She’s Lost Her Words

I am writing this for my friend
who thinks she’s lost her words
who thinks her words

are trapped beneath rocks
who believes she doesn’t possess the thirst
to move those dry mountains
my dear friend
needs to know
her words, those languid thoughts
the beautiful ones under the rocks
will seep into the rich black soil
decompose
reform
then be carried onward by industrious insect and
cyclical underground element
until they flow into jostling aquifers
cascading into wild rivers
roaming up as sparkling wells
into crystal waters that feed bubbling fountains
in thirst she will sip
and those wet words
her words, will quench her imagination
saturate her parched muse
and her pen will flow once again
with the beauty
she thought she’d lost
somewhere along the way

Turquoise Eyes

Dedicated to my dear friend, Deb who has done nothing but encourage me to keep writing even when I  believe (as I do often), I am anything but a writer…
